Thinking Humanity within the Complexity of the World

Edgar Morin is a French philosopher, sociologist and writer whose work has transformed how generations understand complexity, knowledge and the human condition.

Across more than eight decades of thought and public engagement, he has challenged the separation of disciplines and argued that reality must be understood through the relationships, contradictions and uncertainties that compose it.

Complexity does not mean that reality is merely complicated. It means that phenomena are woven together through relationships, interactions, contradictions, feedback and consequences that cannot be understood in isolation.

Morin calls attention to the ecology of action: once an action enters its environment, it can escape the intentions of the person or institution that initiated it.

Responsible leadership therefore requires adaptability, vigilance and humility. Decisions must be revisited as circumstances change.

Understanding another human being requires more than explanation. We may explain behaviour through data, categories or external causes while still failing to understand the person, their experience and their perspective.

Human understanding requires empathy, self-examination and the capacity to recognise the limits of one's own point of view. It is essential to dialogue, education and coexistence in plural societies.

Humanity inhabits a shared planetary condition. Different peoples and cultures preserve their histories and identities, but they are also connected through ecological systems, technological networks, global risks and a common future.

Morin's idea of terrestrial identity does not erase difference. It asks humanity to recognise a community of destiny within which diversity and unity must be thought together. This insight is one of the foundations of the Forum's Planetary Humanism.

Morin's contribution to education reaches beyond curriculum reform. He asks education to confront the fundamental problems of knowledge, error, uncertainty, understanding, human identity and planetary citizenship.

Education should help people learn how knowledge is produced, how perception can be distorted and how different dimensions of reality belong to a connected whole. Its purpose is not simply to transmit information, but to prepare human beings for the complexity of life.

Morin's educational thought offers more than a set of themes. It proposes a transformation in how human beings learn to know themselves, encounter others and inhabit the world.

The World Humanism Forum draws inspiration from Morin while developing its own contemporary and intercultural trajectory.

Planetary Humanism is not presented as a closed doctrine. It is a horizon of inquiry and action.

The World Humanism Forum seeks to honour this legacy through education, dialogue and action while opening it to other intellectual, cultural and ethical traditions.
